Delhi doctors implant pacemaker in lower abdominal cavity of second time cancer survivor

In a very rare and unusual surgery, which is probably only the third such case in India, a team of doctors at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI) here has achieved a feat of implanting a pacemaker into the lower abdominal cavity of a 68-year-old woman. What is further intriguing is the fact that the patient, Naseema Begum, is a second time cancer survivor.

The team of doctors was headed by Dr Aparna Jaswal, senior consultant in the department of cardiac pacing and electro-physiology. According to Dr Jaswal, the patient first fought cancer in her left breast about 17 years back.

About two years ago, the patient first came to Fortis Escorts when she had her first pacemaker implanted in the right heart cavity. However, about a year ago, the cancer spread to the right breast and the resultant infection created issues for the pacemaker installed in her right heart cavity.
